John Blair Condemns Yet Another Dark Money Group in NM-03
Activity from third dark money group demands strong and immediate action from all candidates in the race
SANTA FE -- Today, John Blair denounced the ad from yet another dark money group in NM-03. The Alliance to Combat Extremism, a 501(c)(4) group, does not disclose its donors and has created ads to attack a candidate in this race. This secretive, dark money group comes on the heels of two others groups who entered the race on May 7, 2020.
“I condemn these ads in the strongest possible terms,” Blair stated. "This is why dark money has no place in New Mexico, and why I fought against these shady, secret groups as Deputy Secretary of State. I renew my call for Teresa Leger Fernandez to denounce dark money ads and demand they ALL come down immediately.”
BACKGROUND: Prior to running for Congress, Blair served as Deputy Secretary of State to New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, where he worked to expand state rules that cracked down on dark money in state campaigns. In his Congressional race, Blair has refused corporate PAC money and argued extensively against dark money and the outsized influence of money in our elections.
Earlier today, Jewish Insider identified the new dark money ad that was released today in a story highlighting the role of dark money in the NM-03 race.
Last week, Politico wrote that “two groups have reported a collective $300,000 in advertising spending to the FEC: $50,000 from Perise Practical Inc., and $250,750 from Avacy Initiatives Inc. The groups are almost assuredly connected."
Blair is the only candidate in this race who has worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC and who worked for President Obama. Blair served in the Obama Administration in the Interior Department as Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs where he worked with state and local governments to enact President Obama’s progressive agenda combating climate change and protecting our land. Before serving in the Obama Administration, Blair worked for New Mexico Democrats including then Congressman Martin Heinrich, Senator Jeff Bingaman, New Mexico Supreme Court Justice Edward Chávez and then New Mexico State Auditor Hector Balderas.
